Irish horses competing in Les 5 Étoiles de Pau, France
Irish-bred horses are set to compete at the first 5* event to go ahead for 2020 – Les 5 Étoiles de Pau, France. Dressage will run from 13.00-18.30 tomorrow, Thursday 22nd October and from 8.30-11.45 on Friday; the Cross Country phase will run from 13.00 – 17.00 on Saturday and Show Jumping will begin at 14.45 on Sunday (subject to change depending on the 2nd horse inspection). All times are local: France GMT+2.
The line-up of horses set to compete is studded with Irish breeding – of the 62 horses entered, 19 horses are Irish-bred (31%). Irish horses will compete for Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain at the prestigious event.
In terms of breeding, of the 19 Irish-bred horses, four are out of Traditional Irish Horse mares; two are by a Traditional Irish Horse sire (Watervalley Cool Diamond & Puissance); four are by Thoroughbred sires; two are out of Glidawn Diamond (ID) mares; and there is one Traditional Irish Horse competing (Gortfadda Diamond, bred by Sean Thomas Lydon, Co. Galway).
Looking at the credentials of the Irish horses set to compete, a stand-out entry is Tim Price’s (NZL) mount Ringwood Sky Boy (ISH) – this horse had 14 starts at 5* (previously 4*) level since 2013, most notably winning the Burghley Horse Trials in 2018 after finishing 5th at the same event in 2017. Ringwood Sky Boy (ISH) was bred by Myles Mahon, Co. Wexford.
Also competing is Graf Liberty (ISH), who finished an impressive 4th place at the Badminton Horse Trials in 2019 after just four starts at this level since 2015. Traditional Irish Horse Gordtfadda Diamond will make his debut at CCI5* level with Emilie Chandler (GBR), as will Artful Trinity (ISH), the youngest horse entered to compete at nine years old, with Great Britain’s Izzy Taylor.
