Irish-bred event horses account for over 40% of Badminton accepted entries
Irish-bred event horses account for 41% of the accepted entries for this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. Eight former Badminton winners returning to the UK event this year, namely Australia’s Sam Griffiths, Paul Tapner and Andrew Hoy, New Zealand’s Mark Todd and Jonathan Paget, and Great Britain’s Oliver Townend, Pippa Funnell and William Fox-Pitt. Four of the eight, Sam Griffiths, Paul Tapner, William Fox-Pitt and Pippa Funnell, will compete Irish-bred horses.

Sam Griffiths and Paulank Brockagh (ISH) return to Badminton as defending champions, while fellow Australian, Paul Tapner will campaign Kilronan (ISH). William Fox-Pitt has entered his Rolex Kentucky 2014 winner, Bay My Hero (ISH), with team mate Pippa Funnell competing aboard the Irish-bred Second Supreme.
Six riders line-out for Ireland this year, five of which will be riding an Irish Sport Horse. The Irish contingent will be made up of Clare Abbott with Euro Prince (ISH), Joseph Murphy with Electric Cruise (ISH) and Sportsfield Othello (ISH), Michael Ryan with Ballylynch Adventure (ISH), Camilla Speirs with Portersize Just A Jiff (ISH), Sam Watson with Horseware Bushman (ISH) and Aoife Clark with Vaguely North.
Since 1995 Badminton Horse Trials has been won by an Irish Sport Horse six times. That year saw USA’s Bruce Davidson claim victory with Eagle Lion. The Gipfel sired gelding was bred by Patricia Nicholson whose breeding programme is still enjoying success with the Davidson’s through horses such as Knight Lion, Cruise Lion and Keltic Lion.
In 1997 David O’Connor produced another US victory onboard the Irish Sport Horse Custom Made. Finishing in second place was Mary King and Star Appeal who returned to win the class in 2000.
Great Britain’s Pippa Funnell claimed back-to-back wins in 2002 and 2003 with the highly successful Irish Sport Horse Supreme Rock who was sadly put to sleep in 2013 aged 25. Bred in County Cork by Lindy Good, Supreme Rock was by the Thoroughbred sire Edmund Burke and out of the Bassompierre sired mare Rineen Classic.
