“I thought I wouldn’t ask any more of him. He’s done so much; so many huge courses in his life. He’s a proven cross country horse. When he tells me he’s not wanting to do it, it’s time for him to stop.” Mary King

Imperial Cavalier “Archie” is a bay Irish Sport horse who was born in 1997 and was bred by John Brennan, Ballyscanlon, Tramore, Co Waterford.  Imperial Cavalier (ISH) breeding is by Cavalier Royale (HOLST) out of Gene Pool (ISH), by Imperious (TB).

The silver Olympic team medallist winning mount was retired last week at the age of 17.   His contribution to the sport of eventing will be remembered for top placing at CCI4*, finishing in the top six out of seven as well as taking a Silver medal at London 2012, a Bronze team medal at European Champions in 2011 and part of the team that won Gold at 2010 WEG.

Mary King in her official statement upon retiring “Archie” said  “His enthusiasm for the sport and for life in general was second to none. He has retired fit, sound and healthy.” Imperial Cavalier had 1701 British Eventing points upon his retirement from the competitive sport of Three Day-Eventing.  It is believed he will go on to have an active retirement.  Mary King realised upon his last outing  and a near miss at Badminton CCI4* this year  that Archie had lost his “feistiness” and they bowed out of the competition with grace in what was one of Badminton International horse Trials most challenging courses yet.

Ridden and produced to three start level by Vicky Brake 2005 it was Mary King who then took the ride in 2007 on Archie.  Imperial Cavalier was owned by Eddie and Sue Davies and Janette Chinn.  It will be at the Chinn’s home where Imperial Cavalier will retire too.
