Irish Sport Horse Columbcille Gipsy tops PSI Auction at €700K
This September saw Kilkenny’s Ger O’Neill and the Irish Sport Horse mare Columbcille Gipsy (Toulon x Grundyman) become Six Year Old Champions at the FEI WBFSH World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses in Lanaken, Belgium.
Now the Kilkenny-bred mare has gone on to fetch the joint top price, an incredible €700,000, at the PSI Auction in Germany yesterday (Sunday).
Reacting to the auction result Ger O’Neill added “It is fantastic to see an Irish-bred horse being able to top the PSI Auction and I think it shows that the breeding in Ireland is going the right way“.

Bred by Eamonn Murphy Columbcille Gipsy also won coveted Irish Breeders Classic final in 2017 with Ger O’Neill on board. Murphy co-owned the Toulon sired mare Columbcille Gypsy with O’Neill until her sale following the Lanaken win.

38th P.S.I. Auction – December 3rd, 2017 • P.S.I. Sport and Auction Centre Anum
Zum Glück Price Highlight at the 38th P.S.I. Auction
(Ankum) The 38th P.S.I. Auction brought a total sum of 14.635.000 on December 3rd at the P.S.I. Sport and Auction Center in Ankum. “That was an exceptional auction” mentioned Ulli Kasselmann and Paul Schockemöhle added “Quality is honored”.
Both were satisfied, because Zum Glück was lucky in the lot – the 4-year-old Zonik-Florestan I-son earned a knock down price of 850.000 Euros, and with that, the highest price at Performance Sales International. The extra large Oldenburg stallion is an “exceptional horse” and not only Ulli Kasselmann thought that. “Zum Glück was highly coveted by our international clients.” The RS2 Dressage Center in the Netherlands will be his new home.
This year’s catalogue number two, the four-year-old Fürstenball-Don Crusador-daughter Florette earned the second highest price of 700.000 Euros. The Hanoverian mare was already described in the catalogue as “Fashion diva of the highest quality”. Her new owner, Harmony Sport Horses from the USA, was already successful in finding a horse at the P.S.I. in 2012 – then, they got the stallion Harmony’s Don Noblesse who has been highly successful in interntional Grand Prix tests under Susan Pape.
Two of the horses out of Paul Schockemöhle’s jumping collection also changed hands for 700.000 Euros. The first was the 7-year-old dark bay mare Cha Mu from Cornado II x Rheinsberg and the other was the 6-year-old Toulon-Grundymann xx-daughter Columbcille Gipsy. “Cha Mu is a ‘finished’ horse to ride off on”, explained Paul Schockemöhle. “I am sure that the mare will play a role in international top sport very soon.” The LEE equestrian sport and breeding company and Patrick Döller are surely looking forward to this, as they can now call themselves the new owner and rider of this charming Westphalian. Columbcille Gipsy entered the auction ring today with all the best qualifications; he earned the gold medal for 6-year-old jumping horses at the World Championships for Young Horses at Zangersheide in 2017. The Houston family from Leichlingen, Germany secured this promising World Champion for themselves.
A total of 47 horses were sold at the 38th P.S.I. Auction – the dressage horses brought a total of 6.060.000 Euros and the average price was 252.500 Euros and the jumping collection brought in a total of 8.575.00 Euros and the average was 375.826,09 Euros.
Riding Against Hunger
Aside from expensive horses, the idea of charity was once again a set part of the P.S.I. Auction. During the P.S.I. Charity Gala Ball, a sports bag belonging to Dr. Werner Wilhelm and signed by 80 equestrian sports stars at the 1970 Dressage World Championships at CHIO in Aachen, was auctioned off for a good cause. At 10.500 Euros, Swiss businessman Rolf Zimmermann had the knock down price. Then, yet another bidder put down an additional 5.000 Euros on the bag. Both quickly decided to offer it up again to benefit the charity “Reiten gegen den Hunger” (Riding Against Hunger). The next stop will be Horses & Dreams from April 25th to 29th, 2018 at Hof Kasselmann in Hagen a.T.W.. At the gala everyone had the chance to play their part and fill in a donation on a post card. With a further 23.155 Euros, the guests in Ankum rounded out the total sum for “Riding Against Hunger” and “Welthungerhilfe” up to 38.655 Euros. Aid, which is especially important, now around Christmas, will arrive where it is most needed.
