Irish-bred horses claim the top three placing at The Landrover Burghley International Horse Trials

General September 4, 2018

It was a thrilling weekend at The Landrover Burghley international Horse Trials with spectators kept in suspense as the leader board changed dramatically after each phase.

However, the weekend was truly a special one for Irish bred sport horses as they showed their versatility with exceptional performances in all three disciplines.

After the Dressage phase, Irish Sport Horses occupied eight of the top ten placings, with Kiltubrid Rhapsody (ISH) and Sir Mark Todd (NZL) taking the lead on a score of 26.4.

Time penalties in the cross-country phase played an influential role in the final standings of the competition. The course was an imposing and challenging test, and with the added length to Winner’s Avenue, only four horses completed the course within the time allowed.

Even after this gruelling test, all five of the top placings, after cross-country, were occupied by Irish Sport Horses and seven of the top ten. Ringwood Sky Boy (ISH) and Tim Price (NZL) produced a classy clear round just outside the time allowed to take the lead, just 0.6 of a penalty ahead of last year’s winners, Ballaghmor Class (ISH) and Oliver Townend (GBR), who had stormed around inside the time.

On the final day, the Showjumping phase claimed its fair share of casualties with only eight clear rounds of 39 starters. Once again the Irish Sport Horses proved to be the stars of the show, claiming eight of the top ten spots and, remarkably, all three podium placing were also taken by Irish Sport Horses.

Ringwood Sky Boy (ISH) and Tim Price (NZL) kept their narrow lead over Ballaghmor Class (ISH) and Oliver Townend (GBR) to finally achieve their first four star victory together, after knocking on the door for so many years. Swallow Springs (ISH) and Andrew Nicholson (NZL) produced a double clear inside the time to climb from 16th after dressage third place overall.
