Irish Horses Claim Seven Championship Titles at HOYS 2016

General October 14, 2016

Wednesday 5th of October to Sunday 9th of October saw “The World’s Most Famous Horse Show” return to Birmingham’s NEC.  Competing at this show is widely regarded as a pinnacle of achievement in the equestrian world which many owners and riders aspire to achieve.

Over 1200 horses contested the different showing rings in 65 classes, qualifying for this prestigious event from all over the United Kingdom. Amongst these were 196 Irish bred and breed horses, from Connemara’s to Cobs and Thoroughbreds to Draughts, entered in 31 of these classes. These Irish bred horses managed to scoop several titles across the pond with 12 1st place’s (18% of all the first places), 12 2nd places (18% of all 2nd places) and 7 3rd places (11% of all 3rd places). But as if this wasn’t enough, Irish bred horses won 7 champion titles (25% of champion titles), one of which was Supreme Champion horse of the show, and 5 reserve champions (18% of reserve champion titles).

Out of the 197 Irish bred horses entered at HOYS, 87 of these were pulled in in the top 9 in their classes, a whopping 44%. HOYS state that only 1% of horses attending qualifiers make it through to this finalist event, so to make it this far is an achievement let alone reaping in the champion titles!

The Irish Horse Gateway was proud to sponsor the Small Show Hunter of the Year Championship, an International 1m45 Show Jumping class and the owners and riders lounge following the success of the previous years sponsorship.
